How To Survive Home Renovations

Home renovations are a nuisance. The thought of all the noise, dust, and inconvenience that seems to go on forever is enough to make many people postpone the work they would like done almost indefinitely. But, how do you survive home renovations if you decide to take the plunge, or if there’s a problem that requires urgent attention?

Trust but Verify

Choose a contractor that you can trust. There are too many stories out there of home owners losing their money to unscrupulous contractors. Remember, this contractor and his team are going to be in your home, maybe for weeks. The more comfortable you feel about them being in your private space, the happier you will be.

Find someone that has good references, and if possible, that has completed work (to your standards) for someone you know. You might also want to consider having the contractor complete a small project on your behalf before asking them to quote and tackle a larger one. This will allow you to gauge if they are a good fit for you.

When receiving quotes, ask for details so that you know exactly what you’ll be paying for.

Expect The Unexpected

Unfortunately, renovations can sometimes reveal hidden problems in your home that you may have not known about. This might result in your having to pay for additional work unexpectedly. When setting aside your budget for a project, keep a little extra aside for the unexpected. (Check out this compilation of building issues you don’t want to have!)

If all goes according to the initial plan, you’ll have a bit extra to spend on upgrading your finishes, or to put aside for the next project.

Enjoy The Journey

Accept the fact that for the duration of the renovation project, there’ll be a lot of noise, dust and inconvenience. If you can look past the issues that renovations create, you have the opportunity to enjoy the journey. It can be an enlightening experience watching the work progress and seeing your ideas come to life bit by bit.

Remember, once you reach that “destination” and the work is complete, any inconvenience experienced is usually soon forgotten.
