Kevin’s two favourite materials are steel and wood, so it was no surprise to me when he decided to make a steel and wood staircase for our container house project. We’re about half way there, and we have been using it! It is turning out so beautiful, I can’t help but admire it every time I go up or down stairs.

Dealing with Expansion And Contraction
Expansion and contraction as things heat up and cool down, is something that every child learns at school. It’s one of those things that I mostly believed about because it was taught in school, but nothing I really thought would make much of an impact in my life. Well, I was wrong!

A few weeks ago, we posted our most controversial article yet! We were surprised at how many people thought that our decision to use expanded polystyrene (aka EPS) boards for our ceilings was a bad idea – especially our US readers on Reddit. (Thanks for the concern!) It brought up some questions; mainly, how safe is EPS?
Continue reading How Safe is EPS?Reclaimed Wood Skirting Boards
Is there any reason why you can’t make reclaimed wood skirting boards (aka baseboards) for the rooms in your house? Do your skirting boards have to look like you would traditionally expect them to look? We don’t think so, which is why we made our own out of some reclaimed wood.

There are products out there that use polystyrene for ceilings, but they are usually coated with something, or moulded to look less like polystyrene. But what about using plain sheets of polystyrene? Well, we’re trying it out.

It was difficult choosing a topic for today’s blog post. We’ve been working on a few small things, but nothing really worth dedicating to a full blog post. If you have been following our blog you’ll know that the container house reveal for the north side of our house was eminent. Well, here it is! This side is 99.9% complete. There’s a tiny bit of silicon sealing work that we must complete, and some possible snags (we shall see). But otherwise, totally live-able and super comfortable. Our hard work has paid off and Kevin and I secretly think that this might end up the most comfortable sub-section of the project.

Thanks to a very generous donation, we have a couple of boxes of real marble tiles. That means we have the opportunity to install a marble tile back splash. What better place to make use of this opportunity, than in the north container’s coffee station?

Kevin could not wait to get to tiling the shower floor with the hexagonal tiles he spent so many hours cutting to size. Guess what we spent this past weekend doing? Yes, you guessed right! We were tiling. Well, technically, Kevin was tiling while Gwen and I passed tiles and tools, and helped with the cleaning up. But this was super because I also couldn’t wait to see how the floor would turn out.
